was probably one of the very first second-determine nominations that president obama announced. chuck hagel ended up not being in brussels today. he has not become the new defense secretary yet because republicans in the senate have filibustered his nomination. a cabinet nomination has never, ever in the history of the united states been filibustered before. but these republicans in this congress and our time decided that they would do this unprecedented thing to chuck hagel. one of the major items on next week's news calendar is that the republicans are expected to finally relent and allow chuck hagel to be confirmed. but jane mayer published something at the new yorker today that made headlines everywhere today because she turned up the way republicans have been operating in washington at the time they have been trying to stop him. to be clear, even with the unprecedented filibuster, everybody knows that chuck hagel is going to be confirmed as defense secretary. democrats have a majority in the senate. hagel has the support of every single democrat in the senate and he has the support of

the nomination. this is almost in the nature of a stunt because these were always no votes on hagel, and obviously the white house isn't going to listen to 15 republican senators opposing chuck hagel, whom they say they're sticking with. what are the other pit falls going forward as we await action on hagel next week? >> you know, i think you've hit on it, an dre. we continue to await action on hagel next week. in theory the pit fall is something comes out in the next couple of days that in some way disqualifies him. i know not one of the 15 republican senators who signed this letter asking president obama to withdraw chuck hagel as his nominee for secretary of defense held even a 1% hope that that would happen. they do not think that hagel is the right person on the right time. i do think it's worth noting is john mccain. we've talked about john mccain and chuck hagel. once very close friends. mccain during the chuck hagel confirmation hearing was one of the most poignant, maybe ted cruise was the most poignant, but one of the most pointed critics of haling. mccain not putting his

to the point. we'll see. let's talk about chuck hagel. bill kristol wrote an interesting piece on the importance of reconsidering these nominations. he used harriet miers as an example. any chance of that. >> with respect to harriet miers, the conservative opposition to her nomination to the supreme court came out pretty early and they made a strong case that she was less qualified and others and we got samuel alito who has served with distinction since he was placed on the high court. with respect to chuck hagel what is interesting to me is to see what democrats come out and oppose his nomination. he had a miserable appearance. it was a disaster when he testified last week. you heard that from people who were paid to defend the administration like robert gibbs said he was unprepared and unimpressive. martha: where does it go from here? do it look like lit pass to you or is there any sort of -- you mention robert gibbs groundswell for reconsideration. >> we have a senator from nebraska say he intends to support the nomination. and of course hagel served from nebraska. what will
